Fifteen years of being found.
We started as a Toronto digital agency in 2010. We became visibility engineers when the question stopped being where do we rank and started being what do the machines say.
The agency that kept rebuilding itself.
Digital Bureau opened in Toronto in 2010 as a classic digital marketing agency. Websites, search, ads, analytics — the unglamorous work of making a business findable and then making that traffic pay for itself. The promise on the door was simple: strategy meets results. Fifteen years later it’s still the only promise we make, even though almost everything underneath it has changed.
For the first decade, the job had a stable shape. Someone typed a query, saw a page of ten blue links, and chose. Our craft was earning a place on that page and building sites good enough to convert the click. We got good at it — technical audits, content programs, e-commerce builds, paid campaigns that actually reconciled against revenue. That work still runs today, and it still matters.
Then the page of links stopped being the destination. Answer engines arrived — ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Google’s AI Overviews — and began doing the choosing on the customer’s behalf. A question now returns one synthesised answer, assembled from sources the reader never sees. You are either inside that answer or you are invisible, and ranking fourth means nothing to a model that cites two.
So we rebuilt. We rewrote our own methodology around entities and structured knowledge, built in-house tooling to watch what the engines actually say about our clients, and folded generative and answer engine optimisation into the same foundation that already powered our SEO and web work. We didn’t abandon the classic practice — we extended it to the surfaces where decisions now happen. That’s the whole company in one sentence: same promise, new physics.
From blue links to written answers.
- 2010
Founded in Toronto
Digital Bureau opens with a simple promise — Toronto's Premier Digital Marketing Agency, where strategy meets results. Websites, search and a stubborn refusal to bill for activity instead of outcomes.
- 2013
Search becomes the core practice
Organic search and paid acquisition move under one roof. One team owns the whole query — what people type, what they click, and what happens after they land.
- 2016
Builds and e-commerce
Clients stop asking for campaigns on top of broken sites. We take over the build: performance-first front ends, clean information architecture, storefronts engineered to convert.
- 2019
Structured data as strategy
Schema, entities and knowledge graphs graduate from technical housekeeping to strategy. We start writing for the machines that read a page before any human ever sees it.
- 2023
Answer engines change the question
Generative answers begin absorbing the click. We rebuild our practice around GEO and AEO, and start tracking what ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and AI Overviews actually say about our clients.
- Today
One visibility engine
Search and AI surfaces run as a single system: one foundation, one content model, one set of instruments. Wherever the question gets asked, the goal is the same — be the answer.
Six rules we don’t bend.
Proof, not promises
Every engagement starts with a baseline and ends with a number. If we can't measure the lift, we won't claim it.
Machines and humans
A page has two readers now. We write for the person deciding and the model summarising — and refuse to sacrifice either.
Foundation first
No campaign outruns a broken site. Speed, structure and schema come before spend, every single time.
Compound, don't churn
We build assets that keep earning — entities, content, technical equity. Rented attention stops the day the invoice does.
No lock-in
Everything we build is yours: your accounts, your code, your data. We keep the work because it works, not because leaving is painful.
Say the hard thing
If the strategy is wrong, the market is shrinking, or the budget is aimed at the wrong channel, you'll hear it from us first.

Instruments, not opinions.
Most agencies can tell you where you rank. Far fewer can tell you what an answer engine says about you this morning, why it changed, and which page to fix. That gap is the entire reason we exist.
In-house answer-surface tracking
We don't guess at AI visibility. We monitor how ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google AI Overviews describe your brand — and watch what changes when we act.
Engineering-led, not deck-led
The people diagnosing your site are the people fixing it. Strategy is written by the same team that ships the code, the schema and the content.
No lock-in retainers
Fixed-scope foundations, then a growth engagement you can end any month. Our retention comes from results, not contracts.
We describe our team by capability, not by headshot: search engineers, front-end developers, content strategists, structured-data specialists and analysts — assembled around what your account actually needs.
Built in Toronto.
Toronto is a city of a hundred languages and no default answer — a place where every category is contested and nobody wins on volume alone. It made us sharper. You learn quickly here that being loud is not the same as being chosen.
We still work the way a Toronto shop works: direct, unglamorous, allergic to theatre. And while the office looks out on this city, the accounts don’t stop at the 401 — we serve clients across North America, from local operators to national brands, in the same timezone spread and the same plain language.
